Laredo Vivos edged Pocatello Lava by a single point to remain the league's only other unbeaten team at 3-0. Kenji Sandoval has been a key scoring option for Laredo, averaging 27.3 points per game this season. On the losing side, Vaughn Domingues turned in another huge all-around effort, headlining Pocatello's league-leading assist numbers at 10.3 per game despite the team sitting at 1-2.
Appleton Papermakers couldn't hold off Chattanooga Rapids in a high-scoring affair, falling 128-122 to drop to 0-3 on the young season. Dashiell Briscoe continues to produce individually, averaging 27.7 points per game, but it hasn't yet translated into a win column for Appleton. The Papermakers have actually outscored several winning teams this season, a sign their defense — not their offense — is the issue so far.
Payson Peaks kept their perfect start alive with a comfortable win over Flagstaff Nightfall, improving to 3-0 on the season. Finnian Braxton has been a steady engine for Payson all year, averaging 27.3 points per game to go with a well-rounded stat line. The Peaks now sit atop the standings with the league's best point differential at plus-35.
Pocatello Lava guard Vaughn Domingues was brilliant in his AIBA debut, finishing with 28 points and a league-high 9 assists, yet the Lava dropped their home opener to the Payson Peaks 101-109. The performance puts Domingues in rarefied company among the week's top performers, but the team's inability to support his production raises immediate questions about roster depth. Pocatello GM and fans will be hoping the surrounding cast steps up before the losses pile up.
The road teams made their presence felt in Week 1's other two matchups. The Payson Peaks traveled to Pocatello and left with a convincing 109-101 victory, with Finnian Braxton leading the way with 26 points to spoil the Lava's home opener. In Chattanooga, the Flagstaff Nightfall got 28 points and a dazzling 8 assists from Briggs Domingues to dispatch the Rapids 117-111 and establish themselves as an early-season force to watch.
Dashiell Briscoe put the AIBA on notice with a league-high 30-point performance in Appleton's season opener, adding 4 assists to go with his scoring outburst. But the Santa Maria Vaqueros answered with a composed home effort, powered by Matias Madrigal's 27 points, to escape with a 123-120 victory. The loss stings for Appleton — Briscoe gave them everything, and it wasn't enough. The Papermakers will need to find secondary contributors if they want to stay in contention.

""That one stings a little more because we were right there the whole way. Laredo made one more play than we did, simple as that — give them credit. I felt good running the offense tonight, but at the end of the day I'd trade every assist for that game if I could. ""It's a tough way to lose, but that's basketball — some nights it comes down to the last possession and it doesn't bounce your way. I liked how we competed against Laredo, especially late, so I'm not going to overreact to one game. ""Honestly, that's the kind of game where you just find a way. Pocatello made us earn every single possession, and I'm proud of how we stuck together when it got tight down the stretch. ""Chattanooga played well tonight, and we didn't do enough to match their pace, especially on the boards down the stretch. I'm not one to make a lot of noise about it — we lost, it's disappointing, and we'll deal with it the right way in the gym this week. No excuses, just work.""

""Chattanooga made shots and made plays when they needed to, and we were a step behind most of the night. I felt like I got my rhythm going individually, but that doesn't mean much when we come up short as a team. We'll take a hard look at what went wrong, especially down the stretch, and come back better for it.""

""That's the kind of game I live for — Appleton was throwing punches all night, and I wasn't going to be the one who let up. I still feel like I've got to earn everything out here, so nights like this mean a lot to me. But I'm not getting comfortable — I'm already thinking about what I need to sharpen for the next one. There's always another level.""

""That one hurts because I felt like we had it right there in our hands against Laredo. I scored the ball well, but that's not what I'm chasing — I want the wins, and tonight we came up just short. I'll take this one personally and use it, because that's how I've always operated. Back in the gym tomorrow, I've got more to prove.""

""Chattanooga's a scrappy group, so I knew that one was going to come down to the little things, and I'm proud of how we handled it down the stretch. I've been through enough of these to know you take the win and move on quick — there's no time to admire it. What matters is we're building the kind of habits that hold up later in the season, and that's what I care about most.""

""Chattanooga made it tough all night, so I'm glad we found a way to close it out. I felt good with my shot early and just tried to stay aggressive the whole way through. Good win, but we know they'll be ready for us next time, so we can't get too comfortable off this one.""

""That was one of those nights where the ball just kept finding the right guy, and I was happy to be part of it against Flagstaff. I try not to get too excited either way, win or lose, but I'll admit it felt good to see everybody eating tonight. ""Pocatello was the more physical team tonight from start to finish, and we didn't match it. I'm not going to make a lot of noise about it — that's just not who I am. We'll get in the gym, watch the film, and figure out what we need to do better as a team. Nights like this happen; it's how we respond that matters.""

""There's no sugarcoating it — Pocatello came out and hit us in the mouth from the jump, and we never found an answer. I've been around long enough to know you don't panic after one night like this, but I also won't pretend it didn't hurt. What matters now is how we respond as a group, and I'll make sure the young guys understand that. I've seen worse nights turn into better seasons, and I intend to see this through.""

""That was about as complete a game as we've played all year — we came out with force and just never let Flagstaff settle in. I felt like everything was going in tonight, but I care a lot more about how we played as a group than my own line. Good teams build off nights like this, so we'll enjoy it and stay hungry for the next one.""

""Mankato made a couple more winning plays than we did, that's really the story of it. I'm not going to get into a lot of noise about it — we know what we need to fix, and it's the same stuff we've been talking about the last few weeks. I got to my spots and got some good looks, but individual numbers don't mean much when we're still searching for that first win. ""Yeah, we got the win, so I guess that's what matters. I did what I had to do against Appleton, same as I always do — that part isn't new to me. ""Everything just felt like it was clicking tonight, and a lot of that comes down to my teammates putting me in good spots. Santa Maria's no pushover, so I was glad we brought the right energy from the start. I don't really get caught up in how many points I score — I just want to keep winning games and let everything else sort itself out.""

""Honestly, I still feel like I've got something to prove every time I step on the floor, and tonight was no different against Santa Maria. Nobody gave me a starting job, I took it, and I play with that same chip every game. It felt good to contribute on both ends, but I'm already thinking about what I need to add to my game for the next one. I'm not satisfied — I don't think I ever will be, honestly.""
